Mr. Super Clear Flat is the topcoat that finished-model photos are quietly shot through. It is the matte standard — a lacquer aerosol from GSI Creos that kills shine dead-flat, unifies a patchwork of paint sheens, and locks down decals without the plasticky glaze cheaper flat coats leave behind. For a genuinely flat, decal-safe, professional matte finish, Mr. Super Clear Flat is the benchmark — nothing off the shelf beats its dead-flat evenness. But it is a lacquer aerosol, so it demands ventilation, a respirator, and a little humidity discipline. Nail the conditions and it is flawless; spray it on a humid day and it frosts white.

Ventilation and safety come first

Mr. Super Clear is a solvent lacquer in an aerosol can. Atomized, it puts real fumes into the air, and it is flammable. This is not optional gear:

Treat it with respect and it is completely safe. Treat it like body spray in a bedroom and you will feel it.

Why it is the matte standard

Two reasons. First, it is genuinely flat — a fine, even micro-texture that scatters light into a true matte with no residual sheen, where lesser flat coats dry to a dull satin or leave a faint gloss haze. Second, it is decal- and finish-safe when applied correctly: it melts a Gundam decal's carrier film into invisibility, blends the shine mismatch between airbrushed base coats and hand-painted details, and leaves the underlying color untouched. Frosting: the one thing that goes wrong

Frosting — a white, chalky haze that ruins the finish — is the failure that scares people off Mr. Super Clear, and it is almost always the same cause: humidity. As the lacquer flashes off, it cools the surface; if the air is humid, moisture condenses into the drying film and dries as a white bloom. Cold cans and heavy coats make it worse. The fixes are simple and reliable:

  1. Check the humidity. Spray below roughly 60–65% relative humidity. A muggy summer day or a bathroom is the classic frosting trap — wait for a drier day or run a dehumidifier.
  2. Warm the can to room temperature (or a bowl of warm — never hot — water) so it sprays fine and warm, not cold and spitty.
  3. Light coats, from about 15–20 cm. Several thin passes beat one wet coat; heavy application chills the surface and pools solvent.
  4. Keep the model at room temperature, not cold from a garage, and let each pass flash before the next.

Do those four things and frosting simply does not happen. Skip the humidity check on a rainy afternoon and even a perfect technique can bloom.

The trade-offs

It is a lacquer, so the gear and ventilation requirements are real — this is not the can to grab for a five-minute job in an apartment with the windows shut. Availability can also be a hassle: as a flammable aerosol it is sometimes ground-ship-only or stock-limited, so it is worth buying when you see it. And because it is so aggressively flat, it is the wrong choice where you want a sheen — a cockpit canopy or a glossy energy weapon wants the gloss variant instead, not the Flat. The verdict

Mr. Super Clear Flat is the best matte topcoat in the hobby, full stop — dead flat, decal-safe, and the finish that separates a built kit from a snapped-together one. The catch is that it is a lacquer aerosol with two non-negotiables: proper ventilation with an organic-vapor respirator, and spraying only when the humidity is low. Meet both and it is effortless and flawless. Ignore either and you will either breathe something you should not or frost a build you worked hard on. Why did my Mr. Super Clear finish turn white or frosty?

Frosting is caused by humidity. As the lacquer flashes off it cools the surface, and if the air is humid, moisture condenses into the drying film and dries as a white haze. Do you need a respirator for Mr. Super Clear?

Yes. It is a lacquer aerosol that releases solvent vapor a dust mask cannot stop — you need an organic-vapor respirator and real ventilation, ideally outdoors or in a booth that vents outside. It is also flammable, so keep it away from flame and heat. Applied with proper protection it is safe; sprayed in a closed room it is genuinely hazardous to breathe.

Is Mr. Super Clear Flat really flatter than other matte coats?

Can you use Mr. Super Clear over acrylic and lacquer paints?

The key is thin passes: a heavy wet coat of lacquer clear can occasionally attack a delicate acrylic underneath, but several light coats sit safely on top. Let the base fully cure first, then build the topcoat up gradually.
