Airbrush nozzles are sold by a single number — 0.2, 0.3, 0.4, 0.5 mm — and beginners quietly panic over which one to buy as if it were a permanent commitment. It is not, and the number matters less than the marketing implies. That aperture sets two things: the finest line you can spray and the thickest paint you can push through without clogging. For models and miniatures the debate almost always comes down to 0.3 mm versus 0.5 mm, and having spec-mapped how nozzle size trades off against paint and pressure across many airbrush configurations, the answer is refreshingly clear.

The quick answer

Buy 0.3 mm (or the very common 0.35 mm). It is the do-everything nozzle for models: fine enough for camouflage, mottling, and detail, wide enough to lay down primer and base coats without a fight. Choose 0.5 mm only if you spend most of your time spraying thick paint, primer, or large scale-model surfaces where speed beats finesse. For a first and often only airbrush, 0.3 mm is the correct default — the number the whole hobby is built around.

What nozzle size actually controls

The nozzle aperture is the doorway paint passes through. A smaller hole atomizes paint into a finer spray and draws a thinner line, but it also demands better-thinned paint and clogs more readily if you get lazy with consistency. A larger hole pushes more paint faster and shrugs off thicker mixes and grittier primers, at the cost of the finest detail. Everything else — a 0.2 mm for hairline camo, a 0.4 or 0.5 mm for coverage — is a variation on that same trade between fineness and flow. Note that nozzle size is quoted in millimeters, not the gauge numbers you may see on hardware tools; stick to the mm figure and you will never be confused.

Why 0.3 is the standard

A 0.3 mm nozzle sits in the sweet spot for the scale this hobby works at. It sprays fine enough for the mottling, fades, and small-part detail that miniature and Gunpla painters want, yet it lays a base coat or a coat of primer across a whole model without the session dragging. One nozzle genuinely covers 95% of what a modeler does, which is why most builders spray for years and never change it.

When 0.5 (or 0.2) makes sense

The bigger nozzle earns its keep in specific hands. If you prime and base-coat constantly, spray large-scale car or aircraft bodies, or push thicker paints and heavy primers, a 0.5 mm nozzle moves more material with fewer clogs and less thinning fuss. At the other extreme, a 0.2 mm shines for hairline freehand camo but punishes any paint that is not thinned just so. Nozzle size changes the line width, not the fact that you are breathing paint. A finer 0.3 mm spray at low pressure produces a little less overspray than a wide-open 0.5 mm blasting primer, but both put atomized paint in the air. Spray in a booth or at a fan-vented window, and wear an organic-vapor respirator for lacquers and lacquer-thinned paints regardless of which nozzle is fitted.

For a first airbrush and for most people's only airbrush, 0.3 mm (or 0.35 mm) is the right nozzle and the debate ends there — it does detail and coverage well enough that you will rarely wish for another. Reach for 0.5 mm only if priming and big surfaces are your daily work, and reach for a two-nozzle brush if you genuinely want both extremes on tap.
