A flat (matte) coat is a topcoat that dries to a completely non-reflective finish. It is the single biggest “instant realism” step in the hobby: raw styrene shine reads as toy; a unified matte skin reads as machined equipment.
Flat coats also visually knit decals into the surface so markings look printed on rather than stuck on. The classic risk is frosting — a white haze from spraying in high humidity or with too heavy a hand.
